National Standards: Context of Lesson:
This lesson will be the continuation of the CSI lab that students began last class. Students will be doing part B of the lab, drawing conclusions, finishing their calculations/observations and preparing to write a lab report. There will be a brief discussion about who was the murderer after the lab is completed. Students will have a formal lab write up to do for this CSI lab and I will very briefly review what the requirements are and students will be assigned a due date.
Opportunities to Learn
Depth of Knowledge: Level 1, 2, 3
Prerequisite Knowledge: Students will be applying their knowledge of differing physical and chemical properties to identify an unknown substance through several investigations comparing the characteristic properties of multiple unknown powders.
Plans for Differentiating Instruction: I will be differentiating instruction in this lesson by allowing students to continue working in their groups and using a pre-made data table.
Accommodations and modifications: To modify this lesson I will be briefly reviewing the procedure for writing a lab report as well as providing written instructions.
Environmental factors: For this lesson there will need to be a clean floor space for walking around while doing the lab, and students will have to abide by normal safety procedures.
Materials:
Teacher:
- All materials required for last class so lab may be continued
- Lab packet from previous class with data for part A completed
Objectives:
- Students will apply concepts about properties of matter and changes in matter to identify an unknown substance.
- Students will compare properties of different substances to identify an unknown substance.
- Students will differentiate between physical and chemical properties.----
Instruction:
Opening
-Students are already in the middle of working on the CSI lab, so I will start off by asking how far individual groups have
gotten with their labs to see how much time they should need before doing/ working on their presentations.
Engagement
- Students will continue to work on their labs, completing the data chart for part B and finishing up with the last bit of testing.
-Discussion of data
Who killed Mr Doughboy?
How did you find out using properties of the substances you were working with?
Closure:
-After each group has finished presenting, I will hand out the guidelines/template for a lab report and briefly go over it verbally. They will be given a specific due date, about a week later.
Students will already be aware of the test on this unit, but will be reminded before the end of class that the test is the last day this week.
students will be given a list of topics that we will create as a class in the last couple minutes of class so they are aware of exactly what will be on the exam: physical and chemical properties of matter, different physical and chemical changes, how these can be applied when identifying a substance.
Assessment:
- Students will be assessed formally through their lab reports.
- Students will be assessed formatively on participating and completing the experiment
